You only need to run the engine long enough on gas at startup to get it to where it will run smoothly on diesel. Let it run a bit, try switching, and if it won't run, switch back before it stalls. Give it a couple more minutes. After a few times you'll get an idea as to how long it needs to run. As for cooldown, probably not more than a couple minutes unless you're really working the tractor.

Get yourself a quart of Diesel 9-1-1 in the RED bottle. Use about double the recommended dosage. The stuff is a miracle cure. We even put it in an old kerosene torpedo heater that hasn't worked right in years, and I think it fixed it. Before it wouldn't run for more than a few minutes at a time. After we put the 9-1-1 in it, it ran for 3 hours straight before we shut it off.
