I always have been told that there are two kinds of rust.. Ferric oxide and ferrous oxide. One of the two is what is known as red rust, and it spreads like cancer. The other is known as black rust, and it forms an inpenetrable barrier to oxygen, effectively eliminating the further rusting of the iron. Unfortunately the only easy way to get the black rust is to have a thick enough layer of red rust on top of it to slow down oxidation. This is the idea behind all those unpainted steel bridges you might see on the interstates. When blasting, removing just the loose red rust and not the tightly connected black rust will result in a good job. I'd be curious to see if it would actually last longer than something blasted to white metal. It just might!
