THere is usually a metal ring or clip that holds the rim of the Tstat into a recess in the meatl housing. This ring can be made from a piece of stainless steel wire about .040" or there abouts. The bellows side goes toward the engine (it usually has an arrow with -- To RAD -- Pointing to the radiator direction. Some have a small capsule about the size of a fat thimble that is a Wax piston that opens the valve. This is also to be on the engine side. A gasket needs to be made (or bought to seal the housing. It should be coated very lightly with #2 permatex on both sides. Be sure to get all old gasket off both surfaces. Good luck. JimN
