to find the steering bath resevoir, you need to take the hood off, and then the front grille. there is a huge casting under there called the front bolster. at the very top you will see a metal cover with maybe 5 or 6 bolts holding it on. remove the bolts and lift up the cover. thats where the lube oil goes. generally 80-90wt gear oil is fine. if after filling, it leaks out down the steering shaft, stop at your john deere dealer and get a couple tubes of corn head grease and put that in there. if the bolster bushings wear, the seal on the bottom of the upper part of the bolster will leak.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
