i got it fixed is the main thing. it was not releasing when you let off the switch when trying to crank it when it was cold, as in the first time it was cranked that day requardless of the air temperature. i replaced the 3 bushing in it, the lever that engages and disengages the drive gear and put a new solenoid with a bigger heavier duty spring on it to make it pull back better. the spring i got from a carb and starter shop in huntsville al, russell brothers automotive. i'm not sure now which thing i did that fixed my problem, but i lean toward the bushing, especailly the mid shaft bushing. the starter did n't show any signs of dragging, but it sounded a lot diffeent with the new bushing in it and spun over faster i think. thanks for all the help. you can do a search on 574 starter to read previous post.
