Hi Tom, 544D has D239 German Diesel same as 674 and 684 models. The D239 will start down to about 20F any colder requires block heater. As Hugh says Diesel engines have to spin fast to start. I am not fimiliar with Hydros but is there a cold start disconnect from the Hydro pump to allow engine to spin faster in cold weather?
