I know this has been up for a while but remember that the Carter Carb has a high rpm adjustment but no low rpm. Some of the others have both high and low rpm valves. Try adjusting the needle valve with the engine runing at high rpm. It should be preset at 1 and 1/2 turns out. Sounds like you are a little rich at high rpm. You also may be firing out of time. You can set the timing by ear by rotating the distributor. If you have a light that is even better. Loosen the two bolts behind the distributor cap. LMack
