Just maybe it was done that way for pulling a plow. Recall the back ach from setting on the seat with the right wheel in the furrow all day day after day. Used to kill me. Grew up on a 2 quarter split farm using two H Farmalls. I am sure we plowed at least half every year for rowcrop and disked the rest for small grain.
