Get yourself a manual. You don't have to have it in hand, just order it now so you'll have one on hand shortly. There are vendors on ebay; user "bsharptwo" puts out some pretty good reproduction manuals.
Rear end and transmission takes your favorite heavy gear oil. SAE 90, 85W-whatever, doesn't matter as long as it's the thick stuff. Fill is a plug on top of the deck to the right of the steering post as far as I know. Level check plug is on the left side; any pipe plug on a vertical surface is a level check plug.
To fix the seal, the wheel and tire have to come off. Whether that's a difficult fix or not depends on what you have to work with. If you've got a shop crane, another tractor with a loader, an overhead hoist, or several burly friends, it's an easy fix. Otherwise, it's going to be a lot of work that you may not want to tackle.
