The same diesel grade engine oil is put in the injection pump, that is in the engine. If it runs poorely, it may have stuck valves, including starting valves. Do a compression check (on the gasoline mode) to see if there is dramatic differences between cylinders. It is a strong engine and will make good power when running well. they are smooth, so don't assume it is OK. If the compression is more than about 15% different between cylinders, Or none on a cylinder, Take off the valve cover and see if valves are stuck or pushrods off.
