I recently put in an exciter circuit on my 1966 IH 140 with an Hitachi alternator conversion. I finally got tired of running the RPM's up high to get the alt to start charging. I used this item from NAPA #BK 3354011 . It fits in a 5/16" round hole just like a toggle. The bulb is permanent, and they don't give any specs on the bulb. I can only tell you it works perfectly, installs in an easy-to-drill hole, and looks as though it has been there since the factory. Alt now charges from start-up, which is one-third throttle for me. Both wires are isolated from ground and the bulb is small, which are the two key points. Here is a link:
This is the red one, you can also get amber, blue or green if you like to live on the wild side. For some reason, the picture of the other colors is taken from a better angle.
BTW, I had the same experience at RatShack. The Electronics component section is now down to a chest of drawers the size of an old-style tube TV. Very disappointing, as the space has largely been given over to overpriced junk accessories for cell phones and IPods.
