Important point was made about spark advance, if it does fire up and then the spark retards it will most likely die off again. They used very little spark adv on these engines, only 8 degrees and the later 450 used no advance at all, just straight shaft. You could block the advance so it would not move and get by with no advance. I personally always set the timing when it is running for the best rpm with the least advance possible. Play with it. (gas dist were any where from 16 to 40 degrees depending on application)
