Definitely sounds fuel related---however, our SMTA had the coil feed wire [6-volts] somehow get down to 2 or 3 strands carrying current to the coil. This was inside the insulation jacket where the wire went over the valve cover & where it was held by a clip. We had many hours trouble-shooting that one--but behaved just like yours. Check for spark at the coil when problems start. Carry a jumper wire along & hook it up from the hot battery post to the coil hot lead. Could be a weak coil also---along with a condenser getting ready to go South.
