I too use a single 1100 cca battery on my 826 and have been for 4 years (same battery dated 2002). The tractor had been converted before I bought it and appears to still have the original starter. I did take the precaution of replacing the battery cables with 00 gauge welding cables. Tractor spins up with alacrity and on those rare occasions when I have to start the tractor on cold days, which we all know takes a little effort with the notoriously cold-blooded D358, it has never run out of juice, or even came close.
I make no claim to have worked on all that many different tractors, so my comments are anecdotal and of limited value perhaps, but experience has convinced me that a single 1100 cca battery is OK in my case. I certainly won't be switch back unless I decide to restore the tractor at some point. I think the battery cables (which are only about 18 inches long) may help a little by minimizing voltage drop.
