The earlier Stage I SH grills were just like the H grilles except for the "IH" emblem versus the "Farmall" emblem on the regular H's. The Stage II SH grill was different. It had the two big extra holes and came out about the same time as the Stage II, later in 1953, at serial number 19234, although I have seen some very late Stage I SH's with the type II grill. So, somewhere around 19200 I would say, the grills changed to the Stage II type. This would be in late 1953.
My SH, 20856, is a very late 1953, but is a stage II. Casting dates range from 10-15-Y to 11-25-Y. So, it was probably assembled in December of 1953. May not have reached a dealer until Jan 1954? Anyway, it is a Stage II, with the newer type Stage II grill. Hope this helps. mike

After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
