I talked to alot of old timers over the years, and all I can say is it is kinda like throwing gernades --close is good enough.
You must understand that there were different shades coming off the assembly line the same day. Quality control was not done with a puter. Many tractor plants ordered from different suppliers to make sure if they ran out, they had a back up bucket of paint handy.
And during the great recession, (they were allowed to call it that back then) they said gray paint was hard to get, because the military used it for ships. Other old timers said that at a certian time gray was the only color you could get.
I have seen them in many colors, and everyone says it is wrong----till you talk to the next guy.
I'm old, and can't remember what I had for breakfast, so most of us old ones are jerking your chain if we claim to know the corect color.
