Len: There is a possibility both of us are correct. I believe the first 1066 may be as you describe. My 1066 was a 75, I bought new, and the head had been changed to different valves. My tractor had a recall from day it was new for heavier rocker arm assembly. Apparently after IH changed the valves, 1066s started breaking rocker arms.
I do know the oil journals in 1066 were always different from 966. If I still had my Blue Ribbon Service manual there were other differences. Some where changes 2-3 years into production and that manual gave the exact serial number break down. Just because both were 414 engines turning 2,600 rpm does not necessarily make them the same.
I don't intend to argue my point with some book writer, My information comes from Blue Ribbon Service manual published by IH and covering 766, 966, 1066 and 1466 tractors. May I suggest Mr. Gay and Mr. Wendel consult the same book. By the way it is 3" thick, and that is twice as thick as Wendel's book 150 years of IH, which included all production.
