The mounting flange (where you loosen the clamps to set timing) has a code letter stamped into the outer edge. The unit from the C may have originally been on something else. The C distributor is code J, the M distributor is code A.
Code A maximum advance is 40 degrees at 1400 rpm.
Code J maximum advance is 30 degrees at 1400 rpm.
By the way, the Super M used distributor J, so I'm guessing it doesn't matter much which one you use.
By the way, the springs determine how quckly the spark advances but the maximum is determined by the shaft. Both the springs and shaft are different between the A and J distributors.
