Larry, what is most amazing about IH, and their design, is how they treated the diesel/gas block.
Without regard for displacement (bore diameter/stroke), the differences between the "bare block" diesel vs gas is only ONE head bolt on the right (passenger side) of the engine.
The diesel has one LESS bolt, and it has to do with the intake port arrangement of the diesel head. The diesel head is a "cross flow head", and thus requires head bolt spacing on a even nature.
Beyond that, gas and diesel IH blocks from a 221 to a 301, both diesel and gas are absolutely identical.
I must credit a local puller, Ed Shoebridge, with this knowledge, yet I can say I verified it this past summer while looking over bare engine blocks at a joint called RF Engine in Morrice, Michigan... look-em up !
