I've been prowling the books and may have a handle on at least what the issue is in trying to cross it. This assumes that the felt seal is essentially the same diameter as the shell seal and rides to the outboard side of it.
The R91 suffix on the alternate part numbers suggests that there are two pieces to this seal, as only one part number is listed (and only one part shown in the drawings) between the washer and the retainer. This would make sense if you're finding both a conventional seal-in-a-shell and a felt ring. That's pretty common on IHs. You'll find a similar felt ring on your front wheel spindles, for example, but there it's listed as a separate part. If the R91 is actually a "kit" of two parts of different types, that would/might explain why your counter guy can't find a direct cross.
So I'm thinking the options are to 1) try your CaseIHNHFord dealer using, having them search on your D number and the two R91 numbers that Bob came up with -- expect them to be quite proud of it, it'll likely come dear -- or, 2) if your old seal is measurable or you can measure the seat and the shaft diameters, your counter guy should be able to look them up that way. If you do wind up going the latter route, and can't come up with the felt seal, it's altogether possible that doubling up on the shelled seal as Bob described, would give you the same or a better actual seal.
