To be able to use "these darn charts" at all, you need to know what model tractor you have first.
Once you have that the charts are easy. The chart lists a year, and then the FIRST serial number for that year.
If your tractor is a Cub, the chart goes like this:
1947 501
1948 11348
1949 57831
...
You have 5985J. We only care about the number part, 5985.
5985 is higher than 501, the first serial for 1947.
5985 is lower than 11348, the first serial for 1948.
