A mag with a partila triggering impulse coupling will do that. I suggest listening to the mag while cranking, A distinct click noise should happen every time it is to fire at starting speeds. If it does not, I would remove it and chack the impulse coupling on the bench. Ground the center wire in the cap to the body of the mag, then rotate the drive, if it springs as turned, then snaps, it should spark. It should be OK if rebuilt. Alternators are not at all related to mags, and do different things. JimN
