That's the culprit... mine had even been taken out and rotated 180 degrees with a new Woodruff key-way milled in it. Then someone had installed the wrong steering arm (I think from a 404)that hit the top of the opening in the front axle casting before it reached stop to stop. Like Paul's, my gears were hardly worn at all, but because the tapered shaft was so bad, and it is integral with the gear, I bought a gear set with the bearings w/bottom bearing casting and steering arm out of a salvage yard. One salvage yard wanted to sell me the whole front bolster, but shipping would have been prohibitive. Found one in MO that would take the "innards" out of one. My power steering torquemotor was added into the steering shaft that runs along the left side of the motor, instead of like the factory in the steering column.
