Paul I have to agree with Les Repair and Bob. Water in the oil usually indicates cracked head and/or blown head gasket or electrolis of the sleeves. The coolant will eat pin holes thru the sleeve or sleeves because of improper ph and conductivity. Cat and Cummins engines have the same problems. While the water treatment unit helps to slow to electrolis, there is no 100% foolproof method known to prevent this condition irregardless what the CIH dealers or posts on this forum recommend. We are currently doing an inframe overhaul on a Case 1450 crawler tractor because of electrolis. I rebuild my IH 1566 about 3 years ago because of wear and electrolis. Depending on your intended use for this tractor, options may vary. I would recommend: 1) Fill the radiator full of water, 2) Remove the oil pan, 3) Look for leaks or drips on the bottom of the pistons. If you see drips under the pistons, you probably have a bad sleeve. Pull the valve cover and look for signs of coolant. If you see coolant, you may have a cracked head (not likely). I do not remember the configeration of the water pump but Cat tractor engines can leak water from the water pump to the crankcase. An engine rebuild for that size is quite costly, several thousand dollars, but check all potential coolant passages on the exterior of the engine before a rebuild. Good luck. Ray

Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
