Like Janicholson said, they had them and didn't etc. It is just like an M doesn't have a dipstick, but an M power plant does... Look at your M block. There is a flat spot on the side that can be drilled and tapped for a dipstick. If you ever have to get your pump rebuilt I would guess they could drill it and tap it for a gauge if you really wanted one.
