Paul: I know how you feel, dog is a man's best friend. I had a shepherd years ago, followed which ever tractor I was using all day. Problem was he followed on the highway and got hit by a school bus. He had managed to breed my neighbors shepherd, thus the neighbor insisted I take a replacement.
The replacement was not as keen following tractor, at least he wouldn't follow it along the road. He lived for 18 years, the very best cow dog I ever owned. I would get up in the morning and from the bathroom window, I could watch old Sport bringing in the cows. From the time he was 2 years old he went for the cows, on his own, without being told, never missed. If I was late, he's have them all in a corral, and standing in the gateway.
Sport would follow the tractor in the field and I didn't realise how posessive he was of the tractors until one day I hired a new guy to run 560 on corn silage harvester. The guy returned from lunch to find Sport lying directly under 560 rear end. From any driection Brenton approached the 560 platform, Sport would let him know he wasn't going to do that. From the barn where I was unloading a wagon, wondered why Brenton hadn't started. When I got to the field, here was dog under 560 and Brenton on top of forage harvester attempting to walk along PTO shaft to the tractor. I took time to introduce them, after that they got along just fine.
Sport also arrived at the farm the day Marg. arrived home with our first born. He was every bit as protective of Marg. and the children as of the tractors. One day when Marilyn was about 11-12 months we were praising her for walking chair to chair, Sport had to get in on the excitement, walking by Marilyn wagging his tail, just as she stood without chair, the big tail knocked her off balance. Dog went on to a corner, she back on her feet followed, and lit into a lecture, course she still couldn't talk much, but the tone was there, and here was Marilyn pointing her finger and coming out with a long speil of no words, and this big shepherd dog cowering in the corner.
We've had other dogs since, but I guess you most remember that dog that grew up with your children.
