I've actually not been around that many of the W series tractors, but I'm not sure if the original headlights mounted to the grill. I'm thinking there is a special bracket that mounted down low on the frame, and the headlights installed on those brackets. The I4 I'm working on has those brackets.
Since an umbrella was pretty much always an aftermarket thing, there was probably a muti-tude of mounting arrangements, depending on who built the umbrella.
