Your twin coil idea would probably work, though I'd expect the breaker points would wear out faster. You'd also need to wire a 2nd condenser (capacitor) in parallel with the existing ignition condenser for it to work right. Better idea is to find the right double output coil. Last one I bought was about $80US. Try finding an Onan generator distributor, or a welding supply outfit. Those 2 cyl Onan motors are used in Onan emergency and RV generators, Miller and Lincoln welders, etc.
