Originally on steel, the F-12 did not really need brakes for stopping. The lugs themselves would dig in and stop the tractor almost immediately. I suspect that is why the levers were so short. The latched lever on the right is mostly useful for holding the tractor when the pulley is being used. A long, heavy belt would tend to sag and pull the tractor forward. Like the other writer here, I used a pipe on our F-12. The problem was that it was heavy and its flopping eventually made the pivot for the lever pretty sloppy. We had no cash and it never occurred to us to go and BUY F-14 levers. The lefthand lever could be used, I suppose, but I don't recall ever using it. It has no latch, anyway. The automatic turning brakes are excellent. Very sturdy tractor, very convenient (for its day) for all kinds of chores. On rubber, we pulled a 7' double disk (meant for our 10-20) in second gear, and a double 12" Little Genius plow (no, not at the same time!). This was really too much of a load for the tractor on steel wheels, but rubber tires absorb far less power and allowed the tractor to be used almost in the next category up. The H that my father bought to replace his 10-20 couldn't do much better than the F-12 with both the same plow and the same double-disk.
