A local auction here last week had a 400D in similar condition, except that the motor was stuck on it. Don't know how stuck, it had a good muffler/raincap on it, but they couldn't get it to turn over when they pulled it into the auction lineup.
I couldn't be there for the auction but I had a friend that was there and I told him to bid up to $600 for me. It wound up selling for $650. Good thing I wasn't there or I might have another project on my hands!
Keep in mind too that those early deisels were known for having cracked heads, it may not be stuck but could be some other problem that made 'em quit using it...and also parts to rebuild them are much more expensive than a comparable gas engine.
