Not sure if there are any regs or resrictions when it comes to a tow vehicle,I would just hate to see the tail wag the dog so to speak. I do know that usually 1/2 tons only have load range C tires as factory equipment, and im not sure if the wheels are rated for as heavy a load as a 3/4 or 1 ton. So a person could easily overload the truck, especially with a goosneck. The main concern I always have is the braking system on a 1/2 is not as beefy. I personally prefer to have more truck than needed, but I also know that if the driver is careful and knows his rig that you can get by with less.
