If the battery is hooked up at the incorrect polarity, for one thing the ammeter will register just bass ackwards. If its right when you turn on lights and/or ignition when shes NOT running it should swing over to - discharge,,,,,if it swings over to + charge its backwards......
If it has a Voltgage Regulator and you install the battery backwards and dont re polarize the genny, it can damage the VR.....
It can charge at EITHER + or - polarity ifffffffff its polarized (prior to restart to avoide any VR damage) and then if the ammeter reads backwards its leads can be swapped/reversed to make it register correctly.
If its a batery powered coil distributor ignition versus a Magneto, the coil is polarity sensitive n should be wired to match your ground i.e. for Pos ground the coils lil + wires to distributor.
Since its 6 volts (I assume??) I would connect the battery at POS ground,,,,,,,,,,POLARIZE THE GENNY,,,,,,,,turn on lights and/or ignition not runnign to verify ammeter is wired correct,,,,,,insure correct coil polarity unles its a Mag,,,,,,,start her up ne see what happens
