In my fully rebuilt H I run Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 full synthetic and change it every couple of years. Hoping to get a lifetime of use out of that engine, and I'm sure I will.
Every other tractor (gas or diesel) and heavy duty truck (gas) on the farm gets 15w-40 diesel oil. We have NEVER had an oil-related problem with anything, ever.
FWIW, when I was in college I had a 95 Ford Thunderbird with a 4.6 OHC v-8 in it. Not much money, so when I changed oil it got whatever was on sale, oil and filter. Never did use any oil at the 3k oil change interval, never had a problem with it. Car is still running with the next owner at 135k or so on it.
