Detergent oil does not really clean, it just keeps the solids in suspension longer and that feature tends to keep the engine cleaner.
That being said, I have switched many old tractors over to detergent oil and have never ever caused a problem with using it. I started doing this in the late sixties when you could still buy them that had never seen detergent oil.
The tractor is designed to last 50 years with an inferior oil, who knows how long they will last with modern oil? The engine can not tell if you put multi weight oil in it. It only sees 40 wt when it is hot and 10 wt when it is cold if you use 10w40. I use 20w50 because 50 wt is not too heavy once it gets hot and on some worn tractors it helps maintain oil pressure.
