My 544 does that (though not recently: I seem to have gotten the hang of it). No need to open up the transmission. Just take the sheet metal off one side of the deck so that you can see the linkage and pry the rods coming out of the transmission back into postion with a screwdriver (sometimes a hammer is also needed). At worst you will need to remove more sheet metal.
As you say, though, it"s worth fiddling with it a bit before taking anything apart. I can also often get it straightened out by messing around with the shifter and clutch. I wouldn"t try towing it, though. Might break something.
