f826: That was done so it would turn shorter. Pre 1963 IH wide front were famous for needing lots of room to turn. A few inovative guys soon noticed the difference, and the most common way was to add lenght to the center steering control arm.
It makes them harder to steer and has been hard on older power steering units. I noticed this when I bought my 656. I'd ask myself why my 300 and 560 wouldn't turn as short. It's basically the same front end. 656 has a longer steering control arm. 560 and 656 are same wheel base, 300 should have been better as it was 6" shorter. In my case 560 soon got a longer steering control arm, and I put narrow front back on 300.
