I don't own a '52 SM and don't know what it has for bolt holes and pads. At the very least, you will have to swap out the forks.
I assume the '54 SM you speak of is actually a '54 SMTA. I own a '54 SMTA and put a Farmall 400 lid on it so that I could have a clean looking Fast Hitch conversion. I am keeping the SMTA lid because the 400 lid does devalue the tractor. As you know, SMTA's carry a premium price. The next owner might not like a FH SMTA.
It has been a while but all I did to the 400 lid was drill one hole for the steering post and fabricate an adaptor plate for the reservoir. Now that I think about it, it does seem that I did something to the forks but it wasn't substantial. I retained the SMTA shifter lever and stuck it in the 400's detachable shifting tower.
The best way to sort out the shifter details is to pour over the parts book. I'll look at the tractor tonight and if anything is different than what I have just written, I'll ad to this thread. I may post some pics.
I would have to say that the 400 lid is closer to a SMTA than a '52 SM with non-live hydraulics. It comes down to things like the battery box seat position.
