This may be off base, but I had a Super C that I started one morning that had an amazing knock. I'd been using the tractor the day before and couldn't imagine what had happened. The knock sounded "high" so I pulled the head off, found that one of the brass screws in the butterfly in the carb. had come lose and the engine had sucked it into a cylinder. Luckily the screw had smashed and did no catastrophic damage, after a valve job (which I knew it needed) and a new head gasket, it ran fine, and is still running good 8 years later...Just more food for thought. I hope you have good luck...
