Buckwheat: You don't say what voltage, 6 or 12? Sounds like a 6 volt with auto parts store cables. 6 volt systems require 00 or 01 gauge cables to carry the amperage. Amperage is what is causing your cables to heat.
Go to a truck or heavy equipment shop, buy a set of good heavy cables, probably cost $25.
