A few months I posted that my '48 S/A had a noise in the transmission that had been preceded by a sharp CRACK sound, I had looked at the gears but didn't see anything wrong. I had later drained the grease (and water) but didn't get back to it until yesterday. I removed the cover again & looked some more. Still looked OK. I turned the engine about 1/8th of a rotation & looked again. Sticking out rearward from the oil slinger gear was what looked like a small pin. When I put my finger on it it fell to the bottom of the case. After several attempts at retrieval I gave up. I added the proper amount of gear grease & put the cover back on. I then started the engine & there was NO NOISE. I guess it's fixed. I looked at the bottom side of the cover but couldn't see where that "pin" could have come from.
Several of you had given your thoughts on what might have been wrong & for that I thank you all.
