Just my opinion, but to me, "nice original" means that the original paint is still there, and even though the paint may be thin and faded, it IS still there, and should be left that way.
Judging from the "before" pictures, I would say that the original paint is long gone. There is very little if ANY paint still on that tractor, and if it is to be preserved, it DID need new paint, and since it IS your tractor, you are free to paint it as you choose. Even if you had chosen gray or red for the color, there would be some that think you did not choose the "correct" gray or red, so I think your choice of gloss black is an excellent choice, and is every bit as "correct" as the high gloss, super shiny, super high dollar paint jobs that some folks think is necessary.
