Is it a 2 wire cutout relay charging system that used the LHBD light switch that controlled charging (Low or High) ORRRRRRRRRRR did it have a full fledged 3 or 4 terminal Voltage Regulator?????
A good and charged up 8 volt battery should read around 8.4 volts just setting there tractor not running BUT to charge it when its coupled to a good generator and the tractors runing at fast RPM the voltage should rise to 9 to near 10 volt range IF IT DONT DO THAT ITS NOT CHARGING THAT 8 VOLT BATTERY
If its the older cutout realy and LHBD light switch assuming all is well and its wired right, the old 6 volt genny can still charge that 8 volt battery although its not gonna charge at real high amps.
HOWEVER if it has a full fledgd Voltage Regulator with EITHER a voltage control relay OR a combination Voltage/Current control relay IT SHOULD BE ADJUSTED FOR BETTER CHARGING
If you already had charging problems with a 6 volt battery THEY ARENT GONNA GET ANY BETTER USING AN 8 VOLT BATTERY................
See what happens if when shes running you temporarily dead ground the gennys FLD post to frame ground???????? If the ammeter then shows a good charge and the battery voltage rises to 9 or more THE GENERATOR IS OKAY so the problem is the Voltage Regulator (If you have one that is) If dead grounding the gennys FLD still dont make her charge then the problems more likely the genny is bad unless the cutout relay isnt closing.
On 6 volt systems I recommend the biggest heaviest battery that will fit plus use 00 gauge cables.
