The parts catalog CD shows two versions of the belt pulley arrangement. One has a gasket between the two housings and shims in the bearing retainers. The other shows shims between the two housings. If you did not have shims or a gasket in there, then I'd say none were required. When the shims are used, there is no gasket. The shims act as the gasket and ofter you will get a little oil seepage. Back in 1940, a little oil I suppose was considered a normal thing. I've had good luck using a very light coating of spray on gasket sealer in this situation.
