It takes a longggggggg time for the generators (the thing you polarize NOT the Voltage Regulator) soft iron field poles to loose their magnetic polarity, so not sure if that was your problem. The problem occurs when a generators field polarity is OPPOSITE that of the battery and you start it up WITHOUT RE POLARIZING THE GENERATOR which can indeed harm the Voltage Regulator..
