The gears will whine some, nature of the beast. The popping is very likely one of the big ball bearings on the diff shafts, the ones that pass out through the side of the tranny to the final drives. And it is the seal around that shaft that is leaking. If you're lucky, the popping will be on the same side as the leak. There are also large bearings and seals at the tops of the final drives around the diff shafts and another pair at the bottom around the actual axles. Removal of the diff shaft on the left of an A is much simpler than on the right, but either makes a good project. The mauals give the order of work and you can find some good threads on it here in the archives.
Also, on the popping, don't rule out a loose wheel bolt. That can get pretty noisy, too, but is usually but not always in both directions.
