I went through a similar problem with my 350. My symptoms were black smoke dark spark plugs and and a funny miss after a few minutes of running.
I went through the carb, points, timing and checked the compression (140 - 150 PSI). And while adjusting the main jet I could find lean, normal and ritch conditions.
My problem was the coil was getting too hot. I did a 12 volt conversion and bought a 12 volt coil so I thought I was good. I picked up a 1.3 ohm resister thinking the coil might be too hot and loosing strenth. Now I can bush hog July canary grass in first with out the TA. Good luck
