I rented a hot pressure washer for a similar project. Took all the crud and anything else that wasn't firmly bonded to the metal right off. Much more aggressive than I expected it to be. While I had it I hit the whole machine, after the first pass with the regular pressure washer with a degreasing solution, then hit it again with the hot.
The machines are expensive to buy and not cheap to rent, so if you have something else that could use a good cleaning up while you have it, get it ready ahead of time. Got any neighbors with somethin' like that. Have them get their stuff ready and they can share the rental cost with you.
Definitely an effective rig for the kind of cleanup you're looking at.
