I have an SMTA. It used to do the catch up thing when I accelerated, I adjusted timing and that seemed to help. I also had the pertronix ignition until recently. I took advice from ChadS and put lighter springs on the distributor advance, I don't know how much that helped. I don't pull it but use it on a 12 foot hydroswing swather in heavy hay. My main jet is probably at 4 or 5 turns out when I pull it hard like that. Best way to set it for load is with a constant load like a Dyno. I usually back off the main jet when not on the swather to help with economy. I set my RPMs up a little, about 2100 on the tach I had. I don't care for it to run faster but want to be able to hold the RPMs under load. On my throttle 5 is near the normal full RPM for PTO work, I run there most of the time but go to 6 with the swather. I don't want to make a hot rod out of it, just need it to do the work I need done. You might post over on the pulling forum for some more suggestions.
