The tractor doesn't have to be split to remove either the top gear - or the one on the countersaft for that matter. Search the archives or follow your repair (service) manual for removing the pressure plate and drive shaft. The constant mesh gear is part of the transmission input shaft cage assembly which comes out of the front of the transmission case. While you are at it, carefully check the pilot bearing on the front of the sliding gear (top) shaft. Also, replace any worn or rough bearings in the housing and replace the seal if you even think it might leak in the next ten years. Gaskets for this were still available from Case/IH as of last year.
