Sounds like the contact is buggered in the 3rd position (momentary or spring-return) of the start switch and so you are just barely making the contact going (presumably) clockwise, then the contact makes strongly going counterclockwise just for a second as you wipe by on the way to off.
A starter push button is not a big deal, just allow it to be energized in the 2nd position only and wire it to do the same electrical job as the 3rd momentary position.
